An Avalanche of Emails!
A Message from Carla Howell
Dear friends,
Thank you!
We're digging our way through hundreds and hundreds of emails about our campaigns and Ballot
Question 1.
We're happy and amazed at your wonderful outpouring.
Thank you for your greetings, comments, kudos, suggestions, and prayers.
small government is possible,
Carla Howell

An Avalanche of Emails!
"I am a bus driver from Western Mass. After reading about your campaign and watching you in a
debate, I was convinced that you might just be the answer to our Mass. problems of overspending, wasteful
spending, and business as usual on Beacon Hill."
"Then having received my absentee ballot, I read with excitement YOUR Question 1. I then, without your
approval, began to campaign for you and especially for Question 1. I carry over 150 people from Mass. a
day on my bus, and I made it clear as people boarded the bus that election day was coming and if anyone
wanted to discuss the candidates or the questions on the ballot, I would help them any way I could."
"The response was excellent and following the election, many people came up to me to thank me for my
help and to tell me that they voted "yes" on Question 1. Many of them never knew that a chance to
eliminate income taxes was even going to be on the ballot!!"
-- Bill F., Western Mass.
"I want to thank Carla Howell for bringing to my attention the facts on the state budget. No other
candidate, nor news organization, provides any facts to back-up their claims. You took my vote away from
Shannon O'Brien. In general, I lean toward the democrats because of their social values, but even I can
see that the current system is not working effectively."
"I voted for Question 1 strictly on the numbers -- 40% growth over the Dukakis budget is plenty for
social programs I care about -- if we get rid of patronage, wasteful policies, and other expensive
loopholes. No one else, including the Globe, used any numbers or facts to back-up their positions."
"I am an Independent and disagree with several libertarian positions, but I agreed with Carla Howell on
this and appreciated her clear messages. If you got votes for Question 1 from others like me, then you got
them from people who are neither working class nor Republican. You may have gotten votes from pragmatists
who see that government is not getting results for all this spending, but do not agree with traditional
Republican values. You may have gotten votes from people who aren't looking to get money back in their own
pockets, but rather to improve the results for all Massachusetts residents."
-- Mr. & Mrs. O., somewhere in Mass.
"I am only 18 years old, so I will be seeing a changed America in my future. The question is, in
which direction will this change go? Keep on fighting, keep on working, keep on giving yourselves to
making America free again. Thank you, your work does not go unappreciated."
-- Adam R, UVM student
"Thank you Carla Howell and Michael Cloud for running and putting Question 1 on the ballot. The news blackout of the media in Massachusetts really illustrates the gigantic power they have in determining what information is given to their readers and the public."
"I don't worry about PACs nearly as much as I do the media."
-- Wallace E, Columbia, TN
"To Carla Howell--
You have made me even more proud to be a Libertarian. Your energy and ability to stay the course through
much adversity and as many roadblocks as your opponents could muster is truly remarkable."
"Please, please continue to stay the course."
-- Sanford B.
"Dear Carla and Michael,
"Thank you for running for office and promoting Constitutional government. You are an inspiration
to those of us who value freedom, and you have shown by your deeds that small government is possible.
Each time, more people wake up to the fact that we are not free."
-- Ellen M.
"My husband and I would like to congratulate you on such a phenomenal showing. You surprised them
all! Question 1 was awesome, and I am proud to say that we live in a town that actually voted the
majority to end the income tax."
"We would also like to thank you for all the work and dedication that you have to the cause. Your
unwavering convictions are something to be admired. Thank you."
-- Elaine B, Mendon, MA
"Compliments and congratulations, Carla Howell and Mike Cloud. A great action idea produces great
results. 15 months and 5 days of work produced an extraordinary accomplishment. Federal lawmakers and
state legislators across the country, take note: a threshold has been reached, if not exceeded. Taxes
are too high, government too big. And the Libertarian Party stands to benefit from the success you have
enjoyed in achieving the 46% vote. You deserve to proud, very proud of this outstanding effort and
outcome."
-- Calvin B., NJ
"Dear Ms. Howell,
"I am very sorry you did not become our governor."
"Unfortunately I was an undecided voter until two weeks before November 5th."
"I voted for you because I believe you were the best candidate. Not only because of your stand on
"gun control", but also on education, health care and of course small government."
"I am a gun owner who had to defend myself, in March 2002, from a hoodlum."
"If in the future you need a volunteer please call, I would be happy to help our cause."
-- Lisa M., Arlington, MA
"We'll do better next time...All I have to say to them is keep your "MITTS" off my money."
"I love you guys, you sure shook em up. I had lots of fun helping and I'll be here for you next time
if you ever do it again. I have nothing but admiration for you."
-- Jim L, Wayland, MA
"A 35 year Taxachusetts expatriate, I was stunned by how close the Small Government Act came to
passage. This shows the kind of dedicated, capable people who put this together. Kudos, Carla and
Michael and all the others who put their heart and soul into this effort."
-- Jim O, Hilo, Hawaii
"I mostly voted my conscience yesterday. I had my 4-1/2 year old with me (my wife had our 6 year
old) and thought what government I'd want for him. That was easy - for the most part. I voted Michael
Cloud, voted Yes on 1, voted anti-big government and anti-'2-party system' anywhere I could. There was
one place I stumbled ... one place I *didn't* vote my conscience. That was Governor. And, the race was
close, so I did what I think many, many people did yesterday - instead of voting for Ms. Howell as I
wanted, I voted against Shannon O'Brien."
-- Mike A.
(We received hundreds of variations on this email message. The people voted against the gubernatorial
candidate they hated or feared - not the candidate they say best represents them and their values:
Carla Howell.)
"The vote for Question 1 was a vote for YOUR ideas, which are obviously shared by many throughout the
state. Hopefully in the not-too-distant future people will not have to vote for the "lesser of two
evils", but can vote for the best candidate."
"For your ideas, your candidacy, and your work on Question 1, my sincere thanks."
-- Philip S., Millbury, MA
"With you Carla. Voted to do away with state income tax, and voted for the libertarian party.
Considering the obstacles you faced, you did a phenomenal job. Please don't disappear from the political
scene. Continue the fight."
-- Name Withheld
"Best wishes. Carla Howell has both my vote and that of my wife. Although she will not be elected
governor, our vote represents dis-satisfaction with the present political climate of tax and spend
politicians."
"Carla was ridiculed by the media, and panned by critics, but she had a consistent message. Small
Government is Beautiful. It is my hope that someday this message will resound throughout our great land."
"Vote "Yes" on 1...repeal the state income tax."
-- Anthony G. - a true "conservative" Republican who believes in the Second Amendment and in Libertarian values
